Hatteras Daily Wind Diary 1998
- 12-9 Much cooler today, winds are out of the NW 25mph and gusting.
- 12-8 Today really went off with strong SW winds, sunny skies, and
temperatures in the Mid 70's. I was totally wound sailing a World 5.6m in a
Shortie. May weather in December.
- 12-7 Demitri sailed a 7.7m sail along with Norm on his Homemade flapper and
7.5m Airfoil in West winds and warm temperatures.

sailing in, with West winds.

- 11-11 Charlie, Gorge Steve, Keith, Emmanual and I met at the shop at
7:00 am. The wind was out of the South blowing a steady 20mph. The caravan
moved North to ramp 34, we were first ones to hit the water. Wave conditions
were waist to head high with extra chunchy shore break. Air temps are about
70 degrees. (Mr. Steve Roan reporting)
- 11-7 Chris Decerbo reported being powered up early on a AHD 300 and 7.5m
sail. By 11am the wind had dropped to below sailing conditions.
- 11-6 Gorge Steve and Charlie sailed boilers(North of Rodanthe) in strong NW
winds. Sail sizes were 5.1m and the waves were waist to chest high.
- 11-5 I sailed with Chris Deserbo and Louis from Bic sports and Neil Pryde
at the reef, on 5.3m and 4.7m sails. Charlie and Gorge Steve sailed at the
lighthouse with about 35 of their closest friends. Winds were out of the
North and air temps in the mid 50's.
- 11-4 We just got back from the reef. My hair is dripping salt water on the
keyboard, but I just had to tell you what a great time Gorge Steve and I
had. I was fully powered on 5.3 World Bomber and the Saxo 270
- 11-3 Sailors caught 6.0 conditions at 6:30 in the morning, then the winds
dropped to up and down 7.5m conditions for the rest of the day.
- 10-31 10-31 North winds, sunny skies, & mild tempertures gave leaving and arriving
sailors a nice day on 6.0m sails.
- 10-29 Reports from "the hole" have sailors powered up on 6.0m & 6.5m
sails.
Winds are out WNW, sunny skies and temps in the low 70's.
- 10-27 The wind blew from the NW all day. Conditions at the hole was marginal
7.5m sails. At the North end of Avon The Windsport Clinic people were
blazing on 6.5m sails.
- 10-23 The North winds slowed down a little bit today, giving sailors a
chance to stretch out sore muscles from Thursday using 6.0m sails and 9'
slalom boards.
- 10-22 Steve had a slam packed session at the Hole today. Winds started light out
of the NW. and by noon he was fully wound on a 4.2 World Bomber and AHD 259.
- 10-21 6.5m & 7.5m conditions in Avon with winds out of the North. Andy
Brandt reported 5.4m conditions in Nags Head. Were expecting large NE winds
on Thursday and Friday.
- 10-14 Steady 15mph winds out of the West turning NorthWest.
- 10-12 A little 7.5m sailing in the late afternoon. North winds.
- 10-6 North winds changed more Easterly and built. Sailors started their day
on 7.0m sails and were powered up on 5.5m sails by mid day.
- 10-5 North winds in the morning had sailors planing on 6.5m and 7.5m sails.
- 10-2 NE wind powered sailors on 6.0m sails in the Sound. The waves at the
lighthouse were chest high with lots of Current. Steve and Charlie competed
in the sail, swim, and walk event at the lighthouse (because of light winds
on the inside;)
- 9-29 North East 15 - 20
- 9-28 West 15 - 20
- 9-27 Southwest 20 - 25
- 9-23 Solid 20 - 30mph winds out of the NNE. Wave conditions are extra
large. Sailors report being totally wound on 4.6m sails at the hole.
- 9-21 NE winds 12-18mph picked up in the early afternoon. Steve and Charlie
tested the 1999 World Taylor 7.5m with the new AHD 299. We rigged the 7.5 on
a Powerex 490/26 and I was able to downhaul the sail to perfect shape
without using a downhaul tool. I found the sail easy to waterstart with the
new smaller sleeve and 2 cams. The sail was smooth in the gusts and plenty
of power to coast through the lulls. With the AHD 299(153 liters) we were able
to plane with just a few whitecaps on the water and were last one still
planing when the wind dropped.
- 9-9 Continued 20-25mph NW wind early, fading in the afternoon.
- 9-8 The wind switched to the NW and the temperature plummeted from 85 degrees
to 65 degrees. Slalom sailors were cruising all morning on 5.5m sails, but
the wind dropped down later in the afternoon.
- 9-7 Steve got bombed out of his mind sailing in SW winds 20 to
25mph at the
point. Steve was fully loaded on his 5.3m World bomber slashing up the
waist high waves.
- 9-5 NW winds in the afternoon 15-20mph. Sailors reported
being powered up
on 7.5m sails.
- 9-4 Steve caught a late session at the hole, powered up on the
World Bomber
4.2m sail. Winds were out of the WNW 25 to 30mph.
- Bonnie
- 8-19 Patrick Hohmann is visiting from Switzerland and rented
gear here at
the shop. Patrick was a little skeptical about the new Saxo 270 and Taylor
Worldsail. He says they only use race gear back home. Patrick came in this
afternoon to buy gloves and told me he was by far the fastest guy at the
hole. Powered up on a 5.6m sail with winds out of the N. He couldn't
believe the speed that the package generated and still gave great control.
- 8-13 Sailors caught a early evening session on 7.5m sails with
winds out of
the NE.
- 8-13 Sailors caught a early evening session on 7.5m sails with
winds out of
the NE.
- 8-5 Strong NE winds continue today. The wind meter in the
shop is recording
gusts up to 25mph. My father rented a Windglider trimaran today and said the
windsurfers were passing him like he was standing still.
- 8-4 The first customer in the store reported being powered up
at 9am on a
5.7m sail and then rigging down to a 4.5m sail at 10am. A low pressure
system sitting off the cost is causing the wind to continue out of the NE.
Finally a little sun today.
- 8-3 NE wind 20 to 25. Rodanthe reports steady wind over
30mph.
- 8-2 NE winds 20 to 30mph. Sound side sailors report being
over powered on
5.0m sails at 10am.
- 8-1 Strong NE continued all day today gusting to 30mph.
Twelve local sailors
bashed it out at the Lighthouse. Strong current and light wind on the inside
had sailors doing a lot of swimming with their rigs.
- 7-31 7-31 NE wind filled in late in the afternoon. Sailors
reported being on 5.5m
sails or smaller.
- 7-26 Wyatt William Roan was born to Steve and Beth at 9:15 am
weighing in
at 6.14lbs and 20" .
- 7-23 Steve, Brad, Pete, and Don sailed North of Avon,
in some of the best
waves we have seen this summer. I was powered up on a 5.3 bomber in SW
winds. The only downfall was there was a lot of Jelly fish in the water. If
you crashed on the inside you ended up getting stung all over. The stings
were a bit of a bother, but the waves were worth it.
- 7-22 The wind turned a little more WSW today and backed off a
bit. Sailors
at the hole reported being powered up on 6.5m sails all day.
- 7-21 Continued SW wind today. Steve Rigged a 4.7 bomber,after
work, and
sailed just a little under powered. I was in the straps planning 90% of the
time, but I could have used a little more horsepower. I tried Richard's 5.5
Naish Koa and was totally wound.
- 7-20 Steve rigged up the Bomber 5.3 and after 2 runs at the
Canadian hole he
was way over powered. He returned to the water with the Bomber 4.7 and
sailed for about an hour. Steve talked 5 other people into crossing over
into the ocean. They played in the small waves until they could barely carry
their rigs back over the dune
- 7-18 Simon Shaw reports being powered up sailing a Bic Veloce
288 and World
Mirage 6.5m sail. SouthWest winds at the hole all afternoon.
- 7-16 Reports from Salvo had sailors on 4.5m sails for about
40 minutes until
the thunderstorms hit.
- 7-11 Mike Fowler reports being powered up on a 6.0m World
Mirage at the
hole. Winds were out of the NE, diminishing late in the day.
- 7-8 After closing the shop at 6pm, I raced down to the hole
to sail. I
rigged up my favorite med. air combo (World 5.3 Bomber and Saxo 270) and
jumped in the water. Everyone else was on larger sails and boards, but I was
fully powered up and had speed on almost everyone. (Steve Roan)
- 7-7 How strange is this? NorthEast winds 18 to 22mph in the
middle of
summer. The winds only lasted about 4 hours, and were gone by the time I got
off work. Visiting sailors report being powered up on 6.0m sails all afternoon.
- 7-6 NorthEast winds brought moderate temperatures and
sunshine. Winds were
steady at 18mph giving sailors a change to work on their speed jibes on flat
water using 6.5m sails.
- 7-4 I was driving South to watch the evening fire
works. Passing the hole,
I Noticed only two sailors out planning. One sailor was using an old Andre
7.5 power leech. What a great sail that was. The first of the no cams with a
twisting leech.
- 6-30 Steve sailed his 4.7m bomber early afternoon in the
ocean with small
waves and large shorebreak. The wind was SW on the sound 25 to 30 mph.

Salvo ramp.
Conditions at the hole were 5.5 - 6.0m sails on the sound with winds out of
the South West.
- 6-15 SW again, but this time 25mph gusting too 38mph. Holy
Cow! What a great
day I had in the waves. Powered up on the Bomber 4.7 and a Hi Tech 8'9" I
sailed with Pete, Demitri, Rodanthe Ron, Nags Head Bill, John, and Brad in
surf that was knee high.
- 6-14 SW winds built in the afternoon. Sailors were able to
plane on 6.5m
sails until dark.
- 6-13 Steve sailed the World Taylor 5.6 and new Bic Saxo 270,
all afternoon,
at Ego Beach. The SW wind built steadily though out the day. The sun was out
and the Ocean temp was warm, no wetsuits were needed. World Taylor made
sails dominated the waves more than any other brand.

with large chunks missing. When they discovered they were practicing loops
over a feeding school of sand sharks. Steve suggested they sail down wind
about a half mile before continuing their private loop fest.
- 5-9 NorthWest wind built all day today instead of
diminishing. Arriving

blast on 5.0m

- 11-26 Wayne B., f-18 pilot from Virginia Beach,
reported being dialed in on a World 6.5m all day sailing in Salvo. Steve And Charlie got
out at the Canadian Hole on a 5.3m World and 1998 Naish 5.0m for about 30 minutes, late in
the afternoon, before the wind died.
- 11-24 A strong West wind is blowing with everyone
blasting on 4.0 and 4.5m sails. Cool temperatures are making it a glove and hood day.
- 11-23 Late in the afternoon a Northwest breeze came
up giving new arrivals a chance to warm up for the week on 7.5m sails.
- 11-19 We had light winds out of the Northwest and
sunny conditions this afternoon. No one was on the water at the Canadian hole, but Steve
R. was ripping it up, in the parking lot, on the Orca landsailor fully wound on a 5.3m
sail. If you haven't tried one of these landsailors they're a blast. No more sitting on
the beach waiting for wind. The best thing is the practice improves your sail handling
skills 100%. The Orca landsailor has large rubber tires so it rolls right over stones and
rough areas. We stock the landsailor in all three Sailworld stores and it makes a great
Christmas gift. Call for more information.
